Hear from one of the young people who brought the house project to Oldham Rochdale and Bury

Hello, my name is Alex, I’m a 22-year-old care leaver and I know all too well the struggles young people like myself face during our time in care and leaving care.

I have had 6 different placements since leaving my foster carers in 2019, and have since experienced placement breakdowns, and living in situations where I wasn’t happy and didn’t feel safe.

In January 2022, I found out about the National House Project. After the initial meeting where it was introduced to us, I thought “how can I bring this to Rochdale”. Since then, I’ve worked really hard to bring the house project to Oldham, Rochdale and Bury, so that young people leaving care don’t have to go through the same rough periods that I’ve had to.

From long days of interviewing, planning, and going to events, talking to friends, family and the NHP about how we can bring this to Rochdale. On 10th October 2022, this dream became a reality, and we launched our House Project, joining together Oldham, Rochdale and Bury to bring this fantastic opportunity to care leavers in our boroughs.

As a founder of the house project in Oldham, Rochdale and Bury, I am extremely proud to be part of ‘changing the narrative’ and providing better opportunities for young people leaving care. Let’s keep up the good work and making a difference for young people!

Young people at the heart of decision making

Their collective views and ideas drive the development of all House Projects through the Care Leavers National Movement. They meet on a regular basis to share good practice, talk about and find solutions to any challenges they are facing and to suggest new ways of doing things. They work hard, have fun and their views make a real difference to how young people leave care and move into their own homes.
