BRO Residential with Manchester & Trafford Project
Posted 17th April 2024
Staff and young people from BRO project headed to Kepplewray in the lake district for the first joint residential with Manchester and Trafford Project.
Young people arrived in Kepplewray where they were ready to complete activities and challenges, working together and working as teams. Young people settled in and were ready for their first adventure, one group headed off to Ghyll scramble whilst another headed off to Rock climb. Young people and staff headed to the Ghyll scramble where they went upstream climbing the rocks, jumping in and trust falling into the water. Young people got to develop their relationships with other young people and staff from the other project, and some young people really challenged themselves particularly Adam - who is scared of water and Heights! well done Adam it was brill to see you confident enough to push yourself to complete the big jump! Even though the water was FREEZING, I think everyone really enjoyed this activity, we definitely had some professional climbers involved -Thank you to Ro who was helping us all and ensuring we were safe!
The Rock climbing team headed off, all young people involved attempted to climb to the top with others acting as guides to ensure they were safe! Climbing the wall was made more difficult as it was a flat, hard wall- Well done to all young people who really challenged and pushed themselves to do this, I know some of you were afraid of heights, Well done to L, Oliver and Kaylum who made it to the top!
The first activities were ticked off, and it was time for Tea- Thank you Kepplewray for delicious food for us all! We headed out to complete some team challenges, where the Riots and Misfits were against one another. The teams worked extremely hard to compete, with Easter egg prizes at stake- there was no stopping anyone! Fighting for first spot completing an obstacle course, a blindfolded bucket bomb challenge and the chicken bar game both teams were super serious on who would triumph! Team Riot took the first-place spot being fastest to complete the Blindfold Bucket Bomb and obstacle course, but Team Misfits definitely won the chicken game, Well Done L and Mahan for your excellent technique and L's long legs! It quickly became dark, so we enjoyed some bush craft where young people made smores and enjoyed toasting them on the fire. We headed inside where we spent time as a big group playing games, drinking tea and chatting in the lounge area, we also had some dancing and singing going on too!
Young people then had an early wake up call for breakfast and were all ready to start the next challenges! We headed out into the rain and split with one group completing the Crate stacking challenge – I think we got up to 11 crates before it tipped! Well done, Demi, Mahan and Adam who really pushed themselves in the pouring down rain to try and beat the record of 19! The other team completed some tree climbing activities working with each other to ensure that all young people were safe, Well Done to Oliver who managed to reach the top despite the treacherous rain and wind!
To finish off we were split into our Riot and Misfits team and had to battle to see who could cross the chess board plan first – it took a while to work out and team Misfits took the win again! Young people were great at problem solving and working out the technique to ensure they crossed without getting killed! By this time we were all shattered and ready for home, we packed up our bags and said Goodbyes, it was really fantastic to see the peer relationships made, as well as staff and young people relationships progressing. Everyone really enjoyed themselves, but everyone was ready for their own beds! Another successful residential ticked off – well done team Bury Rochdale & Oldham, and team Manchester & Trafford!

As we reach the halfway point of 2025, it’s a great moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made together. From welcoming new partnerships and celebrating over 500 young people moving into their homes, to welcoming new Local House Projects and expanding the NHP team, we’ve seen real momentum in our mission to support care leavers.

Young people tell us that the House Project approach helps significantly, but we should never underestimate the enormous challenges they face at such a critical time in their lives. This reality was brought home to us recently with Sue’s decision to swap her working life at NHP for retirement caring for her new granddaughter two days a week. Even though Sue is fully in control of this decision-making process - something our young people often are not - the transition has still been discombobulating; letting go of something she enjoys and that has defined her, and moving on to something that will be incredibly rewarding and joyous.
