BRO & ST Residential

Posted 9th August 2023

Bury, Rochdale & Oldham project spent time with Tameside & Stockport young people at their residential at Ormside Mill in the Lake District. Young people had the best time completing the activities offered, building relationships with staff & young people from the other project and getting to know one another. Young people and staff spent their time in a beautiful cottage & were ready to face their fears from the moment they arrived.... despite the rainy weather at times!

Young people and staff members spent time having fun canoeing, abseiling, completing the Ghyll scramble and competing at archery! When we arrived the sun was beaming, despite the thunderstorm on our way it stayed dry and warm whilst we cruised in our canoes up the lake - which was Fantastic! Tom was a professional at canoeing and took to it like a duck to the water! Well done Tom! We headed back to base & enjoyed home made curry or cheese and onion pie by Amelia and Jodie, then headed out for an evening walk.

On day 2 young people and staff headed out of Ormside & to Keswick to take part in the Ghyll scrambling activity, although it was raining lots of young people and staff got involved with this. Everyone involved braved the cold water and rain to have the best time, diving in and out of the water and braving the rock slides! It was a fantastic activity and we could see how much the young people had fun, laughed & were really supportive of everyone taking part!

In the afternoon young people and staff braved the heavy rain to tackle abseiling down a VERY high rock face.... Young people and staff really braved this challenge as it was quite slippy, and steep! Everyone involved put themselves to the ultimate test by taking part & I know people were really pushing themselves to have a go - well done!

After carbonara cooked by Chloe, young people and staff headed into the barn to take part in Archery, young people really enjoyed this and had fun competing for the highest shot!

After an evening of playing games in the lounge we were all ready for bed, packed up and ready to make our way home - I think everyone enjoyed themselves as they were shattered for the drive home! Young people had built fantastic relationships with each other but also staff from the other project too. Our young people had fun, faced their fears of heights and water, and made memories they could keep forever! We hope young people really enjoyed their time at residential, thank you for the best time guys- we also really enjoyed ourselves! Thanks Tas and Sophie for the lovely postcards too!

As we reach the halfway point of 2025, it’s a great moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made together. From welcoming new partnerships and celebrating over 500 young people moving into their homes, to welcoming new Local House Projects and expanding the NHP team, we’ve seen real momentum in our mission to support care leavers.

Young people tell us that the House Project approach helps significantly, but we should never underestimate the enormous challenges they face at such a critical time in their lives. This reality was brought home to us recently with Sue’s decision to swap her working life at NHP for retirement caring for her new granddaughter two days a week. Even though Sue is fully in control of this decision-making process - something our young people often are not - the transition has still been discombobulating; letting go of something she enjoys and that has defined her, and moving on to something that will be incredibly rewarding and joyous.

This past year has been one of growth and recognition. We moved into a vibrant new office space, welcomed new talent to our team, formed exciting new partnerships, and continued to evolve as a learning organisation. National awards acknowledged our work, but our proudest achievements remain the deep, authentic relationships we’ve built and the sense of belonging that defines everything we do.
